In the morning of September 25, 2015, with the invitation of Prof. YE Zhi-Qiang, Prof. XUE Yu from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, gave us a great academic report in F101 meeting room.
The title of Prof. Xue’s report is “Computational Analysis of the Phosphoproteomic Data”. Post-translational modification of proteins provides reversible means to regulate the function of a protein in space and time. Phosphorylation is the addition of a phosphate group to a protein or other organic molecule. Kinase is a type of enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of phosphate groups from high-energy, phosphate-donating molecules to specific substrates like proteins. Prof. Xue’s group has done good jobs in predicting the selectivity and relationships of the kinases and substrates of phosphorylations. In 2008, they developed the a GPS (Group-based Prediction System, http://gps.biocuckoo.org) algorithm, which can predict kinase-specific phosphorylation sites. Consequently, they further developed a software package of iGPS (“in vivo” GPS,
http://igps.biocuckoo.org) for predicting potential site-specific kinase-substrate relations (ssKSRs) and re-constructing phosphorylation networks using the BLOSUM matrix. And some of these predictions have already been validated by some of the experimental foundings. Prof. Xue’s studies not only provided useful tool for analyzing the phosphoproteomic data, but also the prediction results are accurate for further experimental manipulation. Now Prof. Xue’s group members also do some experiments using yeast and do some kinase-activitty analysis to broaden the applications of their methods.
Prof. XUE Yu was born in Hefei in the year of 1980 and graduated from the university of Science & Technology (USTC) in 2002 with the Bachelor’s Degree of Polymer Chemistry Science and a double major Bachelor’s Degree of Computational Science. Then he earned his Ph.D. in life sciences from the same university under the supervision of Prof. YAO Xue-Biao. He was appointed as the associate professor in USTC from 2007 to 2009. He then moved to the School of Life Sciences in Huazhong University of Science & Technology to hold a position of full professor. He has published over 55 publications with a total citation of more than 1500 times. Prof. Xue has been awaded many honors including the “Trans-century Talent by the Ministry of Education”, “Young Scientific Elite” and “Top Young Innovative Talent” etc.
