RESEARCH INTERESTS
We use zebra-fish to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which the developmental processes are controlled in embryogenesis. Zebra-fish is an excellent vertebrate model for developmental biology and chemical biology. Currently, we are particularly interested in two areas, angiogenesis and body-axis formation. Angiogenesis refers to the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing blood vessels. The growth and metastasis of tumor heavily depend on angiogenesis. Anti-angiogenic treatment can be used in cancer therapy. Body-axis formation is a basic issue of vertebrate development. Our studies begin with screening for small-molecule modifiers of angiogenesis and body-axis formation. Several promising modifiers have been found. They potently impair angiogenesis or body-axis formation. Transgenic, molecular biological and chemical biological approaches will be used to elucidate the mechanisms.
